Non siamo soli, anche quando lo siamo – per fortuna. Siamo composti dalla somma dei nostri dintorni, del mondo fisico e immateriale, delle persone intorno a noi, di coloro che non sono più con noi, di quelli che erano qui tanto tempo fa, e di quelli le cui lacrime vediamo solo nei notiziari. E dei personaggi immaginari delle opere letterarie e delle opere liriche che vivono dentro di noi nelle città. Le città in cui abbiamo vissuto, le conversazioni che abbiamo avuto, la musica che abbiamo ascoltato, rimangono presenti e ci accompagnano. Ci seguono, ci modellano, e ci abbracciano come se fossero una ricca nuvola, piena di ombre uniche. È la memoria delle nostre esperienze più profonde, il nostro microcosmo. Quanto la memoria collettiva ci modella, la memoria del luogo, del passato, dei nostri antenati? Gli alberi ascoltano e ricordano le voci, i pensieri, i sentimenti di tutti coloro che hanno incontrato; percepiamo questa realtà multipla? Ognuno ha la propria piccola nuvola, il proprio piccolo mondo che si incontra con quello della persona vicina. E poi, ci sono nuvole sempre più grandi, più profonde e più lontane; no, non siamo soli, anche quando lo siamo, e questo è probabilmente positivo.

La magia avviene quando la storia è presente nel momento, quando le persone sembrano essere lì da sempre, quando gli edifici sembrano estensioni della natura, solo per completare il quadro; è lo stato di due momenti distanti tra loro ma correlati; l’esperienza in cui il passato si intreccia con il presente, e viene riportato in vita. In un tale ambiente l’artista può sentire la tensione delle informazioni condensate invisibili e rappresentarle con un colpo di pennello, aprendo nuovi orizzonti, facendo un commento, dando una nuova interpretazione, o risvegliando le nostre parti morte nel sentire, nel respirare, nel rivivere le persone che vivono lì.

Nora Lefa percepisce il mondo in tutta la sua molteplicità e produce opere d’arte che tendono a portare in superficie l’invisibile come rappresentazioni della realtà data. Essenzialmente, trasformano la memoria, cercando di lasciare le sue tracce nello “spazio reale”; come segni di contatto, incontri tra persone, l’incontro del passato con il momento presente, spesso creando un’opera che non è confinata su una tela, un’installazione; un “palcoscenico” per rivivere i momenti perduti come se fossero “reali”; momenti che “loro”, e molti altri, non sono riusciti a forzare su di sé, lasciandoli aperti alla proiezione del desiderato e a molteplici letture.

è un’esperienza formata da vortici che ci abbracciano e ci cambiano; le spirali sono il percorso inciso delle impronte effimere. Essendo ognuna diversa, sembrano ombre di movimento congelate nel momento mentre aspettano la nuova preda. Sono probabilmente le ombre del movimento delle persone che sono state qui una volta, che “sono” qui con noi, o che saranno qui in qualche momento. Ombre che hanno preso carne e ossa; vagano in parallelo nei giardini stessi di Villa Doria-Pamphilj…

Nora Lefa M.A., MSc., PhD è un architetto e artista visiva. Ha tenuto conferenze in Università di Atene, Sarajevo, Belgrado e Montenegro; attualmente è Professore Associato presso la Scuola di Belle Arti dell’Università di Ioannina, Grecia. Ha presentato il suo lavoro in diverse mostre personali e collettive ad Atene, Sarajevo, Belgrado, New York, Miami, Barcellona, Palma di Maiorca, Zurigo, Basilea, Parigi, Londra, Skopje e Venezia. Ha presentato articoli in diverse conferenze internazionali e ha scritto due libri: Sarajevo Again, pubblicato in inglese e bosniaco (Sarajevo: International Peace Center), e greco (Atene: Plethron); e Buildings Used: Human Interaction with Architecture – con P. Lefas – (Londra: Routledge); ha co-organizzato conferenze internazionali ed esposizioni, e ha tradotto poesie serbe e bosniache in greco. È madre di due figli.

We are not alone, even when we are -thankfully. We are composed of the sum of our surroundings, of the physical and the immaterial world, of the people around us, of those who are not with us anymore, of those who were here times ago, and of those whose tears we only see in the news footage. And of the imaginary personages from literary works and lyric operas who live within us in the cities. The cities in which we lived, the conversations we had, the music we heard, remain present and come with us. They follow us, they shape us, and they hold us as if they were a rich cloud, full of unique shadows. It is the memory of our deepest experiences, our microcosm. How much does the collective memory shape us, the memory of the place, of the past, of our ancestors? Do the trees hear and remember the voices, the thoughts, the sentiments of all those who have encountered; do we perceive this multiple reality? Everybody has their own small cloud, their small world which meets with that of the person nearby. And then, there are bigger and bigger ones and deeper and further away; no, we are not alone, even when we are, and this is probably good.

The magic happens when history is present in the moment, when people seem to have been there forever, when buildings seem to be extensions of nature, just to complete the picture; it is the state of two distant moments being related; the experience in which the past intertwines with the present, and is brought back to life. In such a milieu the artist can feal the tension of the invisible condensed information and represent it with the stroke of a brush, opening new horizons, making a comment, giving a new interpretation, or awakening our dead parts into feeling, into breathing, into reviving people living there.

Nora Lefa perceives the world in all its multiplicity and produces artworks that tend to bring onto the surface the invisible as representations of the given reality. Essentially, they transform memory, attempting to leave its traces on “real space”; as signs of contact, meetings of people, the encounter of the past with the moment, often creating some painting not confined on a canvas, an installation; a “stage” for people to relive the moments lost as if they were “real”; moments that “they”, and many others, have not been able to force themselves upon, leaving them open to the projection of the desired and to multiple readings.

It is an experience shaped by vortices that embrace and change us; the spirals are the carved path of ephemeral imprints. Each one being different, they appear as shadows of movement frozen in the moment, while waiting for their next prey. They are probably the shadows of the movement of people who were once here, who ‘are’ here with us, or who will be here at some point. Shadows that have taken on flesh and bone; they wander in parallel in the very gardens of Villa Doria-Pamphilj…

Nora Lefa M.A., MSc., PhD is an architect and visual artist. She has lectured at Universities in Athens, Sarajevo, Belgrade, and Montenegro; she is now Associate Professor at the School of Fine Arts, University of Ioannina, Greece. She has presented her work in several solo and group exhibitions in Athens, Sarajevo, Belgrade, New York, Miami, Barcelona, Palma di Mallorca, Zurich, Basel, Paris, London, Skopje and Venice. She has presented papers in several international conferences and authored two books: Sarajevo Again, which was published in English and Bosnian (Sarajevo: International Peace Center), and Greek (Athens: Plethron); and Buildings Used: Human Interaction with Architecture -with P. Lefas- (London: Routledge); she has co-organised international conferences and exhibitions, and has translated Serbian and Bosnian poetry into Greek. She is a mother of two.
